Why This Guide Exists

My first hut was a total accident.

My husband and I stumbled upon Greenleaf Hut, mid-day hike, completely by surprise. I poked around the bunk rooms, looked out at Mount Lafayette through the window, and thought: "I need to come back and stay here." (Spoiler: I've now stayed in that same bunk room three times.)

What started as curiosity turned into obsession. I started planning my first overnight. Then a two-hut trek. Then a full Presidential Traverse. I've now spent 20 nights in the AMC huts and led group trips with other women who had the same initial question I did: "How do I actually do this?"

I created this guide because the information exists (sort of), but it's just scattered everywhere. I wanted to build the resource I wish I'd had: clear, honest, and written by someone who's actually been there.

who this guide is for

You've been "meaning to do this" for a while and want a clear, doable plan

Why You'll Feel Prepared (Not Panicked)

Hi, I'm Meredith!

Hi, I'm Meredith, a hiking and outdoor travel creator based in Rhode Island. I've spent 20 nights in the AMC Huts, led group trips for women in the White Mountains, and created outdoor content for thousands of people who want to get outside but don't know where to start.

I'm not a certified guide. I'm someone who figured this out herself and documented every single thing I learned along the way.

Here's What Others Have to Say

“This hut to hut trip in the White Mountains was honestly one for the books! It checked every box for me and then some. It was adventurous, challenging, fulfilling, super fun and a learning experience every step of the way. This was something that was out of my comfort zone and I was nervous about doing something with a group of people I didn't know but within the first 20 minutes I knew it was going to be great and a wonderful experience. So happy I went for it! I can't wait to do another one!”

faq

Do I need to be an experienced hiker?

No! The guide includes options for beginners, with lower-elevation huts and easier routes for first-timers. The key is training ahead of time, and the guide gives you an 8-week plan to do exactly that.

Is it safe for solo women?

Yes. The huts are staffed, social, and welcoming. There's a full solo female hiking section in the guide covering safety, navigation, and what to expect in the bunkrooms.

How do I book the huts?

The guide covers the full booking process, including the best times to book, how far in advance to reserve, and a discount for becoming an AMC Member.

What if I've never backpacked before?

Hut to hut hiking is often described as "backpacking lite" no tent, no sleeping pad, hot meals served. It's one of the best ways to ease into multi-day hiking.

Is this a physical PDF or a printed book?

This is a digital PDF guide delivered instantly to your inbox after purchase. Print it at home or read it on any device.

What if I'm not from New England?

No problem, there's a whole section on traveling from out of town, including which airports to fly into and how to get to the trailheads.
